We received a second letter a month later stating that our registration was cancelled due to non verification of auto insurance. We ignored the letter as the vehicle was now titled in the new state with new insurance. Auto insurance had lapsed recently and at that point, we decided to go with a new carrier. Six months in, we received a letter stating our 2016 vehicle registration was no longer valid as insurance was no longer being reported to them. We received no threatening letters from the DMV. I have no doubt I will get more threatening letters demanding payment with late penalties however. I sent them copies of our new registrations, our new licenses, and our new proof of insurance cards. They obviously knew our new address because all their letters came directly here on the opposite coast. When I called their office they were very rude and asked if I had sent them copies of our new registrations from our new State of residence, acting as if I should have known to do so. The only option that they provide is paying a fee and choosing to register the vehicles as non-operational, which we also won't do because the process would just begin again next year.
They keep sending us various threatening letters, from stating our vehicles are no longer insured and are illegal, and assessing fines for late registration, which of course, we won't pay. When we received our bills for registering our vehicles in Ca about a month after moving to our new State (still long before they were due) we filled out the change of address on both vehicles on the provided forms and wrote a short note stating that we had moved and re-registered our vehicles in our new State of residence, purchased insurance, and surrendered our CA licenses for new ones in our new State.Ĭa DMV has refused to acknowledge the fact that we no longer need vehicle registration in CA and there are no instructions on their website or on the web stating what to do. We purchased insurance on both vehicles and cancelled the Ca based insurance, making sure that coverage overlapped with no gap.

We paid the fees for license and registration in our new State, and were required to surrender our Ca licenses. We recently moved from California to a different State, leaving months before DMV registration was due in Ca for both vehicles.
